Skegness 1963

Continuing the run for Skegness is this nice rectangular pin depicting the jolly fisherman. Made by Reeves and Co of Birmingham.

Yes its true. I am NOT dead. Simply resting.

I am reaching a tricky stage in collection where I have picked up the common stuff and, bar the odd one or two, am now finding myself looking at pricier pieces. That isn’t likely to happen with my current income though.

Anyway here is a straggler from Skegness.

This one was made by W.Reeves of Birmingham and is stamped as such.

Skegness 1966

This is the last badge of my current batch. Funds are low for a while but I will be buying again soon. This is a classic seagull design in just two colours. It lacks some of the flair of previous designs and seems very much a “make do”design. This one was made by Gaunt.

Skegness 1960

For this one it is Skeggys Jolly Fisherman skipping gaily across the beach The breakout on this is his pennant. This badge was made by Reeves and Co.

Skegness 1965

An addition to the Skeggy collection today with this depiction of the towns Jolly Sailor, simply depicted in yellow red and blue the badge uses the pennant at the top to break the frame. In great condition this one was made by Reeves and Co. and is stamped as such.

Skegness 1964

In every run of fantastic badges there is always a pig, one that does not do the others justice.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you Skegness 1964. A badge that is a real pig. If they all looked this bad then nobody would bother collecting Butlins Badges at all. As you may have guessed I'm not keen on this one at all. Its lazy and not at all innovative. This was made by Fattorini and Sons.

Skegness 1958

Today's offering is a Skegness 1958 pin. Its a three colour badge and is technically fine. For some reason i find it strangely unpleasing though. I don't know if it is the odd choice of green for the fish or the way it doesn't really seem to be in context with the badge i don't know but this certainly is a badge I have for completeness rather then because I like it. Maker is (deliberately?) anonymous.

Skegness 1959

I cant help but think that there must of been some kind of economy drive in force at Butlins in 1959 as this badge is absolutely tiny. Despite being just two colours however it is still a very nice piece and its dinkyness adds to its attraction.

The badge is in almost pristine condition and was made by Reeves of Birmingham.

Skegness 1952

First of a mixed bunch here. This is the Skegness 1952 badge. To the best of my knoledge there were 4 colour variations this year and this was one of the less common. It is fairly poor in condition but is better then none.

The pin housing on the back is bent but otherwise intact. Overall a nice addition. Not the cream of my crop but certainly not the chaff, if I am right about the rarity of the colours it may even be a steal. Maker was Jewellery Metal Co of Dublin and this is stamped on the back.

Skegness 1946 (Replica)

So often after great joy comes slight disappointment. As is the case with my delivery this morning. Now dont get me wrong, as a replica I paid a fair price but the description was so poor that I wasn’t quite sure WHAT i was getting. An eBay seller to avoid I think.

Anyway today's entry is a replica of the 1946 Skegness badge with a gold effect centre and a blue rim. If it was original it would be great but as a replica it really isn't that special. I will have to see what Mr Posty brings me next.

 

Butlins Skegness 1938 (The Jolly Fisherman)

This is my oldest badge. Used in 1938 it was an undated issue with no known variations. Aside from the possibility of ending up with a fake or repro badge the badge has the added difficulty of having no date label being early in the badge days I guess they decided they didn’t need one. As as this time there were only two camps in operation and Skegness had been running for just 2 years.

The badge was made by Thomas Fattorini and is stamped on the rear with the makers mark. It is a bit tarnished but the pin is in place, the enamel unchipped and for a small badge that is over 71 years old that is surprisingly good condition.
